It worked after a few tries. Perhaps the problem wasn't VirtualSMS, but rather the service that was making it difficult to receive SMS some reason. However, I was able to get it to work with a specific setup combination.
It appears that VirtualSMS does not currently accept XMR, as the option is not visible on the website
