June 2026 server breach: ~200 XMR stolen:

On June 8, 2026, OpenMonero was breached again, less than three weeks after the May exploit. An attacker gained root access at the server level, not the application, and took roughly 200 XMR (about $63,000), which the operator said was all platform funds.

The operator then reported the funds as lost and has not committed to reimbursing victims. This is the platform's third funds-loss incident in twelve months.

    Following the latest hack, the OpenMonero admin has issued a new update, having reset all user 2FA tokens and urging them to change passwords and settlement wallet addresses. Users who registered between April 12 and May 22 are encouraged to open a support ticket. A new Session Notification Bot has also been created, while users have been told to block the old one.

OpenMonero is back after 2 weeks of downtime

The project is fully back up and running now. I ve switched the servers around, reset the onion address, environment variables, and backup codes to make everything more secure. We ve also done a pretty big redesign, adding full wallet isolation from the frontend, and the backend IP is now hidden too. 90 XMR were refunded just yesterday.

When you log in now, you get a notification to change your password. We ve got some cool features coming soon like PGP-signed transactions and private key extraction. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how things are moving forward.

Honestly, better to get hacked now and fix things than risk getting hacked later without even knowing. I take responsibility for the old setup. I was hosting everything on one server. But that's changed, the frontend now runs on its own server, and the backend is on a different one, with a different hosting provider. That way, if something happens again, it minimizes the damage.

We were down for almost 2 weeks due to an issue with the hosting providers dashboard (alexhost). All my top vendors got refunded yesterday, and the rest should be done in 2 - 4 months. OM is here to stay for at least 15 years. I think it takes around 2 years to really build solid security for a darkFI project like this.

The past couple weeks have been a huge learning experience. I ve learned about secrets management, source code obfuscation, runtime encryption, wallet isolation, secure deployments, proxies, V8 Bytecode + ASAR Integrity, RAM encryption with AMD SEV, and more. The effort now will really pay off in making the project way more resilient down the line.

Refund STATUS:

In my case I received back 2.55 XMR of outstanding 3 XMR. So indeed 'overt_gebling_877' paid back some amount. However, if he goes on full display stating that all customers of his platform have been made whole that is a lie.

I gave a refund address in September, but at first received only 1 XMR. Shortly after that they asked me to give another refund address to send the outstanding 2 XMR. Due to my inactivity on the platform I only reacted 2 months later. Meanwhile Monero price started to rise and the site operator tried to argue that they only can refund the USD equivalent not the XMR.

I then offered him to donate the remaining 0.45 XMR to a Monero development project of my or his choice without success.

OM might not be a scam, but they do not care for their reputation either.

An additional 16.1227 XMR was refunded in November, increasing the total refunded amount to 73.36 XMR. With about 94% of the affected funds already returned to affected users and vendors, the refund process is now close to completion.

Remaining refunds are underway, and more updates will be shared soon. Given the substantial progress achieved we kindly request that the red warning banner be removed, as the majority of affected funds have already been refunded.

I don't see a thread on this supposed hack with supporting evidence and you deleting threads is a immediate RED FLAG in my eyes.

SCAMMERS cover up and try to hide their actions so whether you pulled an exit scam or not no longer matters in my mind.

OpenMonero is shady. They're using LocalMonero's name for promotional purposes without legitimacy, and have done plagiarism by copying the content + style of eXch's ANN. Looking at the ANN and their Terms of Use more deeply, we can also find contradictions. This service should be avoided!

I've noticed that your baseless comment was just copied and pasted from the trust entry on Bitcointalk, and it looks like no research or review was done before posting.

Also, the first thread in the "Service Announcement" section was permanently removed by the bitcointalk mods after the author used a similar BBCode format to the exch.cx ANN thread. What is your username on the platform? The admin will check your account and send you a partial refund. Normal users have to wait, since vendors are first on the list. If you have no patience, you shouldn't use p2p platforms in the first place. I have to assume that you are a spammer if you don't share your username.

Looks like you're spreading false info on purpose. The admin already refunded most vendors on July 18 (check t.me/p2p_monero_talk for proof).

There’s a big notice on the front page (see the latest news), and logged-in users can see a notification at the top of every page with the amount that’ll be refunded.

If you’re not a popular vendor, you just need to be patient.
