BTCPay Server drained

On August 7th 2026, like some other services that relied on BTCPay Server for processing BTC payments, IVPN suffered a hack that allowed attackers to sweep their entire operating balance (0.6168 BTC) from their Lightning node. The BTCPay Server vulnerability allowed attackers to read Lightning wallet credential files, force-close channels, and sweep operating funds to their own wallets. No customer funds or data were lost in this attack. You can read IVPN's incident disclosure and overview in this event's linked source URL.

Very solid like mullvad, with a very high amount of trust as well. I see them as nearly equivalent in terms of trust at this point even with their lower popularity. They offer their own vpn for a slightly cheaper price than mullvad but unless you live in a country with poor conversion rates I would recommend mullvad more as the difference is very small. They are an excellent choice for a second hop though if you are attempting to build your own fast tor-like proxy chain. If you do decide to do this pay for ivpn with crypto and connect through mullvad when purchasing and using always.
Overall, very good vpn for multi hop setups, trades a tiny bit of trust for a slightly cheaper price than mullvad.
